INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
OF INDIA 2002,
Dweepa
This film handles
the theme of development vs displacement through the main protagonist
Nagi and her husband who live on island. As Government wants to
store water in coming monsoon, it wants to evict the people like
Nagi and Ganapa who have defied the Government orders and stayed
back. What they want adequate compensation with their honour and
dignity, as they are the only Neema performer of the province.
But Government officials express their inability, as only the
‘valuable assets’ are taken as the basis in the fixing compensation.
Through various
incidents and imagines, the film shows how the displacement affect
their lives.
